"Red" Terrier
Possibly Dutch School
Oil on wood panel, circa 1910
Initialed lower left
7 1/2 x 7 (12 x 11 1/2 frame) inches
A charming and thoughtfully rendered depiction of a type of terrier. The most notable trait are the eyes which are captivating and reveal the sweet and soulful demeanor of the beloved companion.
The deep red background makes the subject stand out and pop against the darker tones of the dog's hair, face and eyes adding a counterpoint of intensity to an otherwise calm and reflective portrayal.
Finding and acquiring such deeply expressive and emotional portraits remains very challenging. This particular example came from a collection in Netherlands and, as such, we believe it to be Dutch in origin.
